Why Most Amazon Coops Fail the Predator Test

The majority of chicken coops sold on Amazon use chicken wire — a hexagonal-mesh wire designed for keeping chickens in, not predators out. Raccoons can reach through 1-inch chicken wire to grab hens. Weasels can squeeze through openings as small as 1 inch. A determined dog can tear chicken wire apart in minutes. If a product listing does not explicitly say 'hardware cloth' or 'welded wire mesh' with a specified gauge, assume it uses chicken wire.

What to Look for in Hardware Cloth

Genuine predator-resistant hardware cloth is welded wire mesh with 1/2-inch or smaller openings, minimum 19-gauge wire. The welds should be at every intersection, not just some. Look for galvanized coating to prevent rust. If a listing says 'wire mesh' without specifying gauge and aperture size, request the spec sheet or assume the worst. The SnapLock Formex is one of the few prefab options that eliminates the wire question entirely — its double-walled plastic has no gaps at all.

The Importance of Automatic Door Timing

The most common predator-loss scenario is not a failed wall or wire — it is a coop door left open after dusk. Raccoons are crepuscular and most active in the first two hours after dark. An automatic door that closes at dusk eliminates the most common single point of failure. The RUN-CHICKEN Door T50 uses a light sensor that adjusts automatically for seasonal daylight changes and never requires timer reconfiguration. Its aluminum housing resists freeze-jamming better than plastic doors we have tested.
